The engine was manufactured from 1987 to 1994. The BMW M40B16 engine produced 99.3 PS (73.0 kW; 98.0 HP) at 5,500 rpm of maximum output power and 141 Nm (14.4 kgm, 103.9 ft-lb) at 4,250 rpm of peak torque for BMW 316i (E30) model, or 102.0 PS (75.0 kW; 101.0 HP) at 5,500 rpm of horsepower and 143 Nm (14.6 kgm, 105.4 ft-lb) at 4,250 rpm of torque for BMW 316i (E36).
