BMW M40B16 Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or will not start

Empty gas tank - Fill gasoline up.
Improper fuel grade - Change fuel.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Spark plug wire connection are damaged - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug.
Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Clogged fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Engine has low compression - Check cylinder block and replace defective parts.

Engine runs roughly

Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Air filter element is plugged - Clean or replace air filter.
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjustment procedure required.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Too low idle RPM - Adjust idle speed.

Engine starts and stops

Damaged spark plug - Install new spark plug.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise

Low octane fuel - Use proper fuel.
Engine overloaded - Load reducing required.
Insufficient engine oil - Check and refill engine oil.

Crankshaft or main bearings failure - Change or repair worn components.
