Toyota 1G-FE Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or doesn't start

Empty fuel tank - Add fuel.
Improper fuel grade - Change gasoline.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Defective spark plug wire connection - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Dirty fuel filter - Install new filter.
Fuel lines are dirty - Clean fuel lines.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Test fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Poor compression - Inspect and replace wear parts.

Engine runs irregularly

Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Air filter is blocked - Service or change air filter.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug as required.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrect ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Correct idle settings.

Engine stalls after starting

Defective spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and replace if necessary.

Engine overheating

Ignition timing is improper - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Wrong valve setting - Adjust valves as required.
Dirty radiator fins or faulty radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Low coolant level - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Thermostat failure - Install new thermostat.
Water pump malfunction - Change water pump as required.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Low octane gasoline - Use proper gasoline.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce load.
Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust idle speed.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Crankshaft or main bearings wear - Crankshaft or bearings need to be replaced.

Low engine power

Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and change if required.

Engine oil consumption is too high

Defective seals or gaskets - Defective components must be replaced.
Worn valve guides and valve stems - Valves need to be changed.
Stuck or worn piston rings - Have piston rings replaced.
Damaged piston or cylinder liner - Inspect piston and liner, fit new components as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Test fuel injectors and service if necessary.
